Amorphous Metal Transformers

• The dramatic drop in no-load loss of AMTs is due to the use of a very thin sheet material called amorphous metal (AM) ribbon, like an aluminum foil at first glance, that constitute the core of the transformer. 
• Due to the absence of a crystalline structure, AM core exhibits:
• Lower Magnetic Loss
• Easier Magnetic Reversal
• Less Impact of Harmonic Distortion
• Results:
• More efficient transformer (lower energy loss contributes to lower carbon emission from fossil-fired generating plants)
• Lower temperature rise of core (Longer service life of the transformer)
• Cost effective long-term asset investment by choosing a more efficient unit 
• Total Ownership Cost
• Although energy efficient distribution transformers are marginally more expensive vis--vis less efficient units, they are more cost effective in the long-term and through-out their lifetime. In the 2002 KEMA Sensitivity Analysis, the economic life, loading pattern and electricity price influence greatly the decision in choosing the optimal transformer. The influence of the purchase price is relatively small while the remaining parameters are even.
