Insulin-like growth factor 1, also called somatomedin C, is a member of the insulin family of polypeptide growth factors. It is also one of three protein hormones that share structural similarity to insulin. IGF*1 has a molecular weight of *7,**6 daltons, consists of *0 amino acids in a single chain with three intramolecular disulfide bridges. It is produced primarily by the liver as an endocrine hormone as well as in target tissues in a paracrine/autocrine fashion. Its primary action is mediated by binding to its specific receptor, the Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor, initiates intrIGF*1llular signaling. It is a primary mediator of the effects of growth hormone (GH). It also plays an important role in childhood growth and continues to have anabolic effects in adults.
