Aviation fuel is a specialized type of petroleum-based fuel used to power aircraft; it is generally of a higher quality than fuels used in less critical applications such as heating or road transport, and often contains additives to reduce the risk of icing or explosion due to high temperatures, amongst other properties.

Civil Grade Jet Fuels

• Jet A*1 is a kerosine grade fuel with a flash point of *8 C and a freeze point maximum of −*7 C, and it is suitable for most turbine aircraft.
• Jet A is also a kerosine grade fuel that is generally available only in the United States. It has the same flash point as Jet A*1 but a higher freeze point maximum, −*0 C.
• Jet B is suitable for very cold climates as its freeze point maximum is −*0 C; however, its lighter composition makes it more flammable and thus more dangerous to handle.
• TS*1 is the main jet fuel available in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), with a lower freeze point maximum (< −*0 C) than Jet A*1.

A separate class of aviation fuels are produced to meet the specific needs of military jet engines.
