The head of each talking pen is a recognizer of photoelectronic.Trough the head,it can scan the OID information from book into the pen .Then,CPU will try to identify it., at the same time, it automaticall select the right audio files which store in built-memory At last, it make a sound by earphone or loudspeaker.The most importance of point talking pen is the CPU,also means the processing chip.Seconldy, is recognizer of Photo electronicand storage OID code, it  is implicated in book for Photoelectronic recognizing to deal with.So,the book is a necessary part as well.
