HSM cranes are mainly installed on the deck of boats, used for cargo operation or boat unloading and retrieval where no shore unloading facilities are available. Most are electric-hydraulic or diesel-hydraulic. 

Using an articulated jib (knuckle jib or folding jib), the jib head can be presented close to the load, in order to minimize the pendulum effect. Only limited space is need for stowing the crane in parked position.
