he basic materials are tubes, couplers and boards. Tubes are usually steel. If steel they are either 'black' or galvanized. The tubes come in a variety of lengths and a standard diameter of *8.3 mm. (1.5 NPS pipe). The average weight of tubes is 4.4 kg/m and comes in two thickness 3.2 and 4 mm. Tubes are generally bought in 6.0 m lengths and can then be cut down to certain typical sizes. Boards provide a working surface for users of the scaffold. They are either seasoned wood or steel boards and for wooden boards come in three thicknesses (*8 mm (usual), *0 mm and *3 mm) are a standard width (**5 mm) and are a maximum of 3.9 m long. The board ends are protected by metal plates called hoop irons or sometimes nail plates. Timber Scaffold boards in the UK should comply with the requirements of BS ***2. As well as timber, steel or laminate boards are used. As well as boards for the working platform there are sole boards which are placed beneath the scaffolding if the surface is soft or otherwise suspect, although ordinary boards can be used, and meet the minimum requirements, they can be too long and tougher boards can be necessary. When it comes to steel boards, the thickness preferred for the coil is 2mm and height is *8 mm and is a maximum of 4.0 m long. Both painted and galvanized boards are used with painted ones the most widely used.
