STARSILK™ – Silk Sutures STARSILK™ – Silk suture is a non-absorbable, sterile, surgical suture composed of an organic protein called fibroin. STARSILK™ – Silk sutures are processed to remove the natural waxes and gums from its origin. As Silk is a natural fiber, its does illicit an acute inflammatory reaction, which is followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue (occurring usually in ****1 days). While STARSILK™ – Silk sutures are not considered absorbable sutures, progressive degradation of its fibers results in the gradual loss of tensile strength within the first year. STARSILK™ – Silk sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation. Special Characteristics of STARSILK™ – Silk Sutures: • Raw silk is produced by a silkworm larva**9;s cocoon with ****2 denier. These natural waxes and gums are removed prior to the braiding process, allowing for a tighter, more compact braid. • STARSILK™ – Silk suture is dyed black for easier visibility in tissue. • STARSILK™ – Silk suture is non-absorbable and multifilament in nature. • Although STARMEDIX classifies its silk suture as a non-absorbable suture, it loses most of its tensile strength in one year, and is completely absorbed in 2 years. Thus, STARSILK™ – Silk behaves like a very slow absorbing suture. • STARMEDIX coats its Silk in silicon to limit absorption, increase ductility, and minimize tissue reactivity
