An LCD controller IC (intergrated circuit) is required to operate the graphic LCD. Character modules are organized in blocks of 5 x 7 dots. This allows them to display characters to 4 lines of *0 characters. Each model is STN (FSTN) fluid for enhanced viewing characteristics. Standard TN fluid is available, but is not recommended for new designs due to its limited contrast and viewing angle. EL or LED backlighting is an option for most models.
