Description

Hydrogen Peroxide is a powerful oxidant but a weak acid in water solution. It is soluble in water, ethanol and ether, but insoluble in petroleum ether. Pure anhydrous hydrogen peroxide is a colorless to pale blue syrupy liquid which decomposes violently into water and oxygen if heated above *0. It decomposes under strong light or in contact with metal ions or flammable materials. The most valuable property of hydrogen peroxide is that it breaks down into water and oxygen and therefore does not form any persistent, toxic residual compounds. It is used in the processes of epoxidation, oxidation, hydroxylation and reduction. Its oxidizing properties are used in the bleaching and deodorizing for textile, hair and in paper manufacture. Its application includes the production of chemicals, e. G. Inorganic or organic peroxides, perhydrates. It is also used in water treatment, electronics, food and medical, mining and cosmetic industries.
