Application: H*1 is an excellent choice for a wide range of hot work and cold work applications. It has excellent nondeforming properties, and is used for hot shell punches, mandrels, and applications where resistance to splitting or cracking is desirable. Machinability: H*1 has a machinability rating of *0 compared to a 1% carbon tool steel which is rated at **0. Annealing: Heat slowly to ***0°F for one hour per inch of thickness. Cool *5°per hour to ***0°F and air cool. For surface protection an atmosphere furnace or stainless foil wrap must be used. The annealed hardness of H*1 should be **7 Brinell maximum.
