 Millions of transformers are in use today, connecting homes and businesses with needed electricity. Though benign in appearance, the inside of a transformer requires periodic maintenance of its internal oil, through heating and filtration.

Identification

 A transformer uses copper coils with a steel core to change voltage levels up and down through an electrical line, resulting in a steady electrical current. The oil within the assembly acts as an insulator.

 Function

 If the insulating oil becomes contaminated with moisture or other debris, it must be cleaned to keep the transformer working properly. To evaporate the moisture within the transformer, a hot oil circulation process is applied, which essentially dries the coil and oil. In addition, oil is vacuum filtered through specialized filters to catch debris.

 Considerations

A technician must test the oil to verify that enough moisture has left the solution through dew point analysis. If the moisture levels are high, the technician may disassemble the transformer and dry it through an oven bake procedure.
