Description
Copra is the dried meat, or dried kernel, of the coconut used to
extract coconut oil. Coconut oil is extracted from it and this has
made copra an important agricultural commodity for many
coconut-producing countries. It also yields coconut cake, which is
mainly used as feed for livestock.
Copra meal, or coconut meal, is an important feed ingredient and
the by-product of the oil extraction from dried coconut kernels
(copra).
Copra meal is used as fodder for horses and cattle. Its high oil
and protein levels are fattening for stock. The protein in copra
meal has been heat treated and provides a source of high-quality
protein for cattle, sheep and deer, because it does not break down
in the rumen.
Copra itself is usually too expensive to use as an animal feed,
though it has been fed to pigs and poultry with good results. As
copra oil contains only small amounts of unsaturated fatty acids,
its consumption leads to firm body fat and good flavour.
