Before flax fibers can be spun into linen, they must first be separated from the rest of the stalk. After the retting process, the flax undergoes a stage called breaking, where the straw is broken into small, short bits while the actual fiber remains intact. Following this, scutching is performed, which scrapes away the outer straw from the fiber, leaving behind the pure, usable flax fiber. The result of this process is called scutched flax.
