Organic Mushrooms Knock on the Door of the World Market Songeeall Biotech, a premium mushroom-producing farm located at Ansung in Gyeonggi Province, is set on expanding its export. Unlike other companies, with its high-tech producing system, Songeeall Biotech is more like a semiconductor factory. The President of the company Kim Il-joong proudly said: ƒ The most important thing to culture mushrooms is cleanliness. Thus there is no dust at our farm because we use an air-handling unit that is usually found in a semiconductor factory. As a result we produce high quality mushrooms.ƒ The size of the company is about ***7ƒ£ ‚¡ that includes a floor area of ***5ƒ£ ‚¡ and the farm consists of six floors. For the purpose of mass production, the company has secured an expanded site of a further *3, **8ƒ£ ‚¡. The production process consists of ten steps: making the culture medium, putting the mushrooms in bottles, sterilization, planting, cultivation, scratching, growing, development, harvesting, and sorting, and packing. It takes *5 days to complete the full producing process. Mushrooms have been shipped since ***3 to the tune of 1.5 tons (*0, **0 bottles of mushrooms) per day; this amounts to **0 tons per year. To keep the mushrooms fresh harvested mushrooms are shipped the same day. The company obtained organic and eco-product certification from the government and ƒ G Markƒ - the quality mark for food and agriculture authenticated by the governor of Gyeonggi Province. It has also to its credit acquired the ISO ***1 and ISO ****0 quality certificates from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). President Kim said: ƒ Quality is not only assured by cleanliness; it also depends on the diligence of the supervisor.ƒ Saesong-i mushrooms (King Oyster Mushroom), which are getting popular because of their taste and nutrient content, are quite similar to Song-i mushrooms (Pine Mushroom). (Song-i is from nature but Saesong-i is cultivated by people.)
