Statistical information about the number of people in highly crowded areas, mving through doors or along corridors not only provides important information for security purposes, but also for marketing intelligence. IEE’s People Counter reliably detects and counts persons in restricted security areas or in high-traffic locations. It also detects a person’s walking direction. Based on the 3D MLI SensorTM technology, the People Counter is a vision application that collects real-time distance images of people and objects by means of infrared reflection. An active, non-scanning light source emits amplitude modulated near infrared light. The phase difference between the light which is emitted by the LEDs and the light reflected by the persons and objects in the field of view is measured to create a real-time topographic image of the monitored area. Embedded algorithms process the data to accurately count people and detect the direction of movement. The technology offers reliable data output even in challenging light and temperature conditions. The sensor has a self-diagnosis system and performs semi-automatic calibration.
